2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster unveiling last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a distinct game identity.
The president expressed that the team is now refining the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.
The news echoes a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete content from Ismailer's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative creators we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to continue.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s the game testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It revealed the requirement for a more distinct brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the feedback to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s ready to deliver on its promise to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the new Director of the team. Following several months of discussions, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s guidance and background in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having spent the recent years creating and leading some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving Ben next week. We are all excited to keep witnessing the progress of Project ETHOS in the months to ahead.
David
Brinkman currently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.
Project Ethos was announced in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Initially, 31st Union described the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch states. "Take on the rivals with unique powers, stakes, and tests that change every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and pray your squad can secure victory? The choice is in your hands."
Project Ethos lacks an announced debut schedule or platforms, but enthusiasts can look forward to additional details as creation advances.
