Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual challenge facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

The data paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
